The Tate Modern is one of the top 5 museums in London. Admission is free!

It is one of the most important museums of modern art in the world. It was only opened in 2000 and is located in the centre of London on the south bank of the Thames. It is housed in a former power station with a huge turbine room, which was extensively rebuilt under the direction of the architects Herzog & de Meuron from Switzerland.

The most popular excursion by boat on the Thames

Meanwhile, a large part of London tourists take a boat trip on the Thames. Of course, everyone wants to see the center of London from the ship. Thus, the most popular boat tour is from Westminster to Greenwich, that is, across the city center of London. Very often booked tour, you should book online in advance:

The Tate Modern is officially called “Tate Gallery of Modern Art”. However, this long name is rarely used. It is currently considered to be the most famous and largest museum of modern art in the world. The exhibition space was even significantly increased again for the 2012 Olympics in London.

In the Tate Modern one finds almost only works of art from the 20th century. Famous artists whose works are exhibited in the Tate Modern are Picasso, Beuys, Dali, Matisse and of course the superstar Andy Warhol.

Millenium Bridge: Most impressive is the “journey” on foot to the Tate Modern, over the Millenium Bridge (opened like the Tate Modern in 2000). It is an over 300 meter long pedestrian bridge across the Thames. The architect of the hypermodern bridge is none other than master architect Normen Forster himself. The Millenium Bridge connects the Tate Modern with the St Pauls Cathedral on the north side of the Thames. The bridge was also made famous by one of the Harry Potter films.

How to get to the Tate Modern in London: Southwark Underground Station (Jubilee Line) is about 500 metres from the Tate Modern. If you want to walk over the Millenium Bridge (see above), the St Pauls (Central Line) or Mansion House (District Line and Circle Line) underground station is convenient. From both it is about 1 km to the Tate Modern, 300 meters of which are on the Millenium Bridge. One should, as everywhere in Central London, not get the idea to travel by car. There are no parking places around the Tate Modern. The city centre of London costs a toll.
