The climate of London

Posted by

In London it is milder in winter and cooler in summer than in Germany. London has a reputation for being very rainy. However, if you compare the amount of rain, you get a surprising result. More on that in this article.

Temperatures in London

The average annual temperatures hardly differ between Germany and London. However, it is warmer in London in winter than in Germany, but slightly colder in summer. The coldest month in London is January – with an average temperature of around 4 degrees. These are 3-5 degrees more than in Germany. In the warmest month of July, the average temperature in London is around 16.5 degrees, which is 2-3 degrees lower than in Germany. Due to the enormous size of the city and the high energy consumption in London, it is up to 3 degrees warmer in the city center than on the outskirts on some days.

Snow in London

Sub-zero temperatures are rare, at least during the day, but do occur in London. There are snowless winters in London. In some years, however, there are also longer periods of frost. As it rarely snows, people are less prepared for snow in London. Two centimeters of fresh snow plunge the city into chaos. For example, hardly any car in England has winter tyres. Snow clearing equipment and road salt are also much less available.

Rain in London

The amount of rain in London is world famous. Many Londoners never leave the house without an umbrella.

Statistically, it rains 149 days a year in London (i.e. 41% of the days). It rains a total of about 62 cm per year. The amount of rain is very evenly distributed throughout the year, i.e. about 5 cm every month. So it rains about as often and as much in summer in London as in winter.

If you compare this with Frankfurt (Main), for example, you come to the conclusion that the annual rainfall in London is only a few percent higher. In summer it even rains slightly more in Germany than in London. In winter it rains a little more in London.
